China purchased the unfinished ex-Soviet Navy aircraft carrier Varyag from Ukraine in 1998 and the vessel was delivered to China in 2002. After receiving some extensive refurbishments at the Dalian Shipyard, the vessel was commissioned by the PLA Navy in September 2012 and renamed Liaoning.
