USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Sailors Volunteer at ACEC

Sailors aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) participated in a community relations event at the American Cultural Education Center (ACEC) in Bahrain April 24.

ACEC assists Bahraini youths in learning English and the American culture in preparation for possible study abroad.

The Sailors spent time talking to students, helping them to strengthen their language and to learn more about American culture.

“I really enjoyed working with the students,” said Religious Programs Specialist 2nd Class Gregory Bailey. “It’s nice to get to work with and experience other cultures. I hope the students enjoyed having us help them as much as we liked being there.”

The Sailors visited two classes: one rather new to English and an intermediate group. They chatted with students, sharing information about themselves; where they are from and details of their job in the Navy. The Sailors also gave the Bahrainis a chance to practice what they’ve learned by talking about American landmarks, food and culture.

“It’s nice to try and help out wherever we go,” said Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Odelmo Robinson, assigned to the Wildcats of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 131 embarked aboard Dwight D. Eisenhower. “I think more Sailors should get involved because I think it’s good for us, especially when visiting a host country. “

At the end of the COMREL, the Sailors and the Bahrainis had an opportunity to learn more about each other. Projects like this lead to a mutual understanding between cultures and strengthens partnerships.

“We love when our students are happy,” said Anca Armasoiu, an instructor at ACEC. “We will do whatever we can to see our students succeed and hopefully we will have you all return again. I know if you do, our students will be very excited.”

Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR) promoting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and support missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
