Naval ships ride peacefully where 70 years ago battle raged

Beachgoers frolic on a beautiful spring day as HMAS Benalla lies anchored near them at Park Beach.

COAST watchers have had something extra special to drool over this weekend with two Royal Australian Navy ships anchored off Park Beach.

The vessels have been identified as HMAS Benalla (A04) and HMAS Shepparton (A03).

They are Paluma class ships used for survey work and were laid down and built in Port Adelaide in 1988 before being launched in 1990.

Their home port is HMAS Cairns in North Queensland.

But it’s hard to image that a few nautical miles from where the beachgoers enjoying the perfect spring weather of the Coffs Coast, 70 years ago almost to the day, the war in the Pacific was raging.
