HMAS Darwin Makes Her First Stop on Operation SLIPPER

HMAS Darwin made the first port call of her Operation SLIPPER deployment at Port Sultan Qaboos in Muscat, Oman, earlier this week.

Darwin’s Commanding Officer, Commander Terence Morrison RAN and crew were greeted by Commander Joint Task Force 633, Major General Craig Orme AM CSC and his deputy, Commodore Philip Spedding DSC AM RAN.
Major General Orme addressed the Ship’s Company, describing current operations and the important role HMAS Darwin will play over the coming months.

“It is my privilege to welcome HMAS Darwin into the Middle East Area of Operations, where you will be conducting vital maritime security patrols,” Major General Orme said.
“You are well trained, well equipped and well prepared for your mission. To those of you on your first deployment, work hard and look after each other.”

Port calls are an important component of the duties of Royal Australian Navy vessels deployed to Operation SLIPPER, allowing re-supply, diplomatic engagement and an opportunity for the ship’s company to briefly immerse themselves in local culture and history.
This is the 57th rotation of a Royal Australian Navy warship to the Middle East Area of Operations since the 1990 Second Gulf War and the 33rd deployment under Operation SLIPPER.
Darwin replaced HMAS Melbourne on 18 February 2014.
