An Army depot nestled in a valley of the Sierra Nevada Mountains holds a boneyard containing more M-1 Abrams battle tanks than the entire tank armies of most nations.

The Sierra Nevada Army Depot contains more than 2,000 M-1 Abrams tanks, mothballed and awaiting their fate. Since 2012, these tanks have been the object of a battle between the US Army (who would like to refurbish and update the tanks – saving an estimated $3 billion) and the US Congress (who want the Army to keep open tank production lines by accepting new-build tanks they don’t want – keeping production lines open and preventing job losses in key states).
