Photo of the Day: Hailing from the Americas, the Jabiru is a large stork that is most commonly found in the Pantanal region of Brazil. The word 'Jabiru' stems from the indigenous Tupi-Guarani language spoken in the rainforests of central South America and means 'swollen neck'. Although this is not unique to the Jabiru, their throat contains an inflatable pouch attached to the air passages, possibly used to help them filter out the copious amounts of water they take in while fishing for their dinner. The bare red patch allows the area to be flushed with blood, increasing the intensity of colour. This image was taken by Adam Riley in the Pantanal.
