Distinguished from the Arctic Tern by its grey wing tips, the Antarctic Tern is a common Southern Hemisphere species found mainly around the Southern Ocean. When in breeding plumage, it has a black forehead extending to the crown and back of the neck, while a non-breeding adult has a white forehead and the crown is streaked with white. They lay their eggs in a scrape in the ground lined with pebbles or shells, and the eggs and chicks are often difficult to see as they are so well camouflaged. This captivating individual was photographed by Markus Lilje in Grytviken, South Georgia.
