The Canadian government will acquire 16 P-8A patrol aircraft for around US$5.9 billion in a possible foreign military sale approved by the US State Department.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified the US Congress of the aircraft and related equipment possible sale on 27 June.

P-8 Poseidon multi-mission aircraft are used extensively for surveillance and reconnaissance, search and rescue, and long-range anti-submarine capabilities.

Under the deal, Canada would receive 26 Multifunctional Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio System 5, 38 Embedded Global Positioning Systems/Inertial Navigation Systems for the LN-251, and 25 system processor replacements for AN/AAQ-24(V)N large aircraft infrared countermeasures.

It also includes 22 Guardian Laser Transmitter Assemblies for the AN/AAQ-24(V)N, commercial engines, Tactical Open Mission Software, electronic countermeasures, software, publications, logistics, training and support.

“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to improve the military capability of Canada, a NATO ally that is an important force for ensuring political stability and economic progress, and a contributor to military, peacekeeping, and humanitarian operations around the world,” the DSCA statement said on 27 June.

“This proposed sale will increase Canadian maritime forces’ interoperability with the United States and other allied forces, as well as their ability to contribute to missions of mutual interest.

“This will significantly improve network-centric warfare capability for the US forces operating globally alongside Canada.”
