An almighty gun salute from HMS Albion as she made her way back into Plymouth was heard across the city this afternoon. HMS Albion has returned home after a three-month deployment to the Baltic Sea.
A gun salute took place on board the ship as friends and family on the Hoe and at Devils Point waved to loved ones on board. Families have also been waiting patiently at HMNB Devonport for the Royal Navy ship to arrive back into port.
HMS Albion, the nation’s multi-function amphibious support ship, is one of the Royal Navy’s greatest assets. HMS Albion is one of the most versatile and self-sufficient ships in the Navy’s fleet, and is often used as a base of operations when the Navy is out at sea on deployments. She is one of the Royal Navy’s two amphibious assault ships. Together, their mission is to ‘deliver the punch’ of the Royal Marines ashore by air and sea.
HMS Albion has been described as the Royal Navy’s ‘Swiss Army knife’. She is capable of carrying 400 sailors and Royal Marines with a huge range of skills and experience, from technicians and engineers to medics and chefs.

‘Pleasure and a privilege’
Commanding Officer, Captain Marcus Hember, said: “It was a pleasure and a privilege to welcome The Princess Royal back on board Albion after what has been a demanding operational programme over the past 12 months.
“Our operations have been at the forefront of the UK contribution to Northern European security at a difficult time, working alongside partners and allies.
“At this end of this intense operational period, it was great to welcome friends and family on board for the final leg of our deployment before my people return home to enjoy some well-earned rest over the summer period.”
