A maintenance issue forced USS Truxtun (DDG-103) to return to Norfolk on Wednesday, just one day after the destroyer left for an independent deployment, USNI News has learned.
“Truxtun departed Naval Station Norfolk on Feb. 3 for a scheduled deployment and then returned last night to port for an emergent equipment repair. The return allows the Navy to ensure the ship is at maximum operational readiness before continuing operations,” Cmdr. Dawn Stankus, spokesperson for U.S. Second Fleet, told USNI News.
Truxtun departed the Virginia base Tuesday for an independent deployment, USNI News previously reported. From there, the ship was spotted sailing up the York River to Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Va., before heading back to Naval Station Norfolk, according to ship spotters.
Truxtun is now pierside at Naval Station Norfolk, Stankus said.
Stankus did not specify the maintenance issue, but said repairs are ongoing. It is unclear how long Truxtun’s deployment will be delayed due to the repair.
Truxtun’s latest sendoff was just three months after the ship was welcomed home from a seven-month deployment that included a stint in the Red Sea.
