The Frank Cable is one of two forward deployed repair ships that provide vital services for submarines survival while away from their homeports. The Salt Lake City is a Los Angeles class fast attack submarine and is homeported out of San Diego, Ca.

Hong Kong (Oct. 7, 2006) – Submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) tends deployed submarines USS Honolulu (inboard) and USS LaJolla (outboard) while anchored in Hong Kong Harbor. The tender’s presence made it possible for the two submarines to make a port visit to the Asian metropolis as United States submarines cannot moor to the mainland. This is one of the last Western Pacific port visits Honolulu will make before returning to Bremerton, Wash., to begin decommissioning. The Navy plans to award General Dynamics’ [GD] San Diego-based National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) a detail design and construction contract to procure two new AS(X) next-general submarine tender replacement ships, according to a July 16 notice. The New AS(X)-class ships are meant to replace the aging Emory S. Land (AS-39) and Frank Cable (AS-40) submarine tenders.
