US-built Saronic Marauder Medium Uncrewed Surface Vessel delivered at pace

Saronic’s first Marauder medium uncrewed surface vessel (MUSV) has begun sea trials. The vessel went from design to sea trials in less than 12 months. This is a demonstration that elements of the Royal Navy’s hybrid navy could be delivered quickly with the right funding and industrial agility. The First Sea Lord has promised the RN will have a similar prototype vessel at sea sometime next year.

Saronic laid the keel for the first Marauder in August 2025 and the vessel was launched in late May 2026. This is a build rate unseen in American shipbuilding since the Second World War. Work is already advancing on three further hulls at the shipyard in Franklin, Louisiana, with the second reported to be progressing around 25% faster than the first. A $300m expansion, due for completion by the end of 2026, is intended to increase output to as many as 20 Marauders a year. The speed owes much to aluminium modular construction and commercial off-the-shelf components rather than a bespoke warship design.

Marauder is the largest member of a family of eight autonomous surface vessels (ASVs) that runs from the six-foot Spyglass up through the Cutlass, Corsair, Mirage and Cypher, all sharing a common autonomy stack. Maurauder offers a top speed above 25 knots, a range of up to 5,400 nautical miles and a 150 tonne payload carried in up to 4 x 40 ft or 8 x 20 ft containers.
It should be noted that Maurader is positioned as a logistics and payload truck rather than a combatant at this stage. The Type 9X series of LUSVs/MUSVs envisaged by the RN will have to carry sensors and weaponry and will be a much more complex prospect.

MR-001 launched in May 2026. The vessel has a small bridge to allow sailors to pilot the vessel if needed.

The smaller Corsair USV has already seen action, used by US forces in the recent strike on Iranian naval facilities at Bandar Abbas and in the rescue of two downed aviators near the Strait of Hormuz. Saronic, valued at around $4bn following a $600m funding round in early 2025, sits among the best-capitalised of the new autonomy firms.

Saronic holds a $392m US Navy production contract, but that award covers the Corsair USVs, not Marauder. The larger vessel is instead one of seven designs competing in the US Navy’s MUSV marketplace, with at-sea demonstrations running to October 2026 and a $15m payment plus follow-on eligibility for those that pass. Marauder has momentum and private money behind it, but no production order yet.

On sea trials. Marauder is diesel-powered, and has 4 waterjets rather than propellers.

The Hybrid Navy and Atlantic Bastion concepts point towards exactly this kind of long-endurance uncrewed hull. RN procurement has so far centred on far smaller craft, notably the 20 Kraken K3 Scout USVs bought for £12.3m and trialled under Project BEEHIVE, including a recent airborne launch from an A400M.

The DIP promise of Type 9X LUSVs and Common Combat Vessels to command them are based on timelines stretching into the 2030s, and there is no equivalent on the scale of Saronic in the UK as yet. A sovereign-build preference makes an off-the-shelf American buy unlikely, but the wider question is whether the UK can match this tempo.
