Gordon Pai'ea Chung-Hoon, first Asian-American Naval Academy graduate and first Asian-American flag officer. During World War II, he was in command of USS Sigsbee (DD 502) when a kamikaze crashed into her in Apr. 1945

August 19th, 1981 – Two F-14 Tomcats of VF-41 shoot down two Libyan (Su 22) Sukhoi aircraft over international waters. Flying off USS Nimitz (CVA(N) 68), the Tomcats are on a reconnaissance mission for a missile-firing exercise being conducted by U.S. ships from two carrier battle groups when they are fired on by the Libyan planes

The sixth carrier in the Nimitz-class of supercarriers, it is the fourth warship to be named after the first president of the United States. The GW is currently homeported at Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan
