US warship makes port call at Cambodia naval base

A US Navy warship has made a port call at a naval base in southwest Cambodia.

The US Navy announced that the USS Cincinnati arrived on Saturday at the Ream Naval Base, which has been expanded with China’s financial support.

The Associated Press and other media outlets say this is the first time a US Navy warship has docked at the facility since the expansion work was completed.

The United States has expressed concern that China might use the base for military purposes in return for its assistance.

The AFP news agency says the US littoral combat ship docked at one of the base’s piers about 150 meters away from two Chinese warships.

The US Navy said in a statement that the Cincinnati’s visit to Cambodia celebrates the continued partnership between the United States and Cambodia.

Observers say the port call appears to be part of efforts by the US to increase cooperation with Cambodia, and keep in check China’s increased maritime activities.
